Oscar Wagner, de drie jaar oudere broer van Astrid (42), was een boomlange sterke vent, met handen als kolenschoppen. Toch kreeg hij in 2013 een partytent niet opgezet, geen zware klus. Voor Astrid was toen direct duidelijk dat er iets mis was. Maar het zou nog een paar maanden duren voordat hij naar de dokter ging en de diagnose ALS werd gesteld. Slechts twee jaar later overleed Oscar op 40-jarige leeftijd.
Oscar Wagner, the three years older brother of Astrid (42), was a towering strong man with hands like shovels. Nevertheless, in 2013, he couldn't set up a party tent, not a heavy task. For Astrid, it was immediately clear that something was wrong. However, it would take a few more months before he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with ALS. Just two years later, Oscar passed away at the age of 40.
Dixie Arts (16) heeft een trui aan van haar opa Theo Arts, die in 2015 op 75-jarige leeftijd overleed aan ALS. “Ik was zeven jaar toen hij ALS kreeg en vind het zo jammer dat ik me hem vrijwel niet kan herinneren als een gewone opa, want hij was vijf jaar lang ziek. Ik vind het een mooie trui, ook al is ie een beetje te groot. Als ik hem draag heb ik het gevoel dat opa dicht bij me is.”
Dixie Arts (16) is wearing a sweater that belonged to her grandfather, Theo Arts, who passed away from ALS at the age of 75 in 2015. "I was seven years old when he got ALS, and it's so unfortunate that I can barely remember him as a regular grandpa because he was sick for five years. I think it’s a beautiful sweater, even though it’s a bit too big.
“When I wear it, I feel like Grandpa is close to me.”
Nicky van den Eijnden uit Helmond kreeg in 2016 op 29-jarige leeftijd de diagnose ALS. Hij leefde daarna drie jaar in turbo-stand: hij trouwde zo snel mogelijk, kwam veelvuldig in de publiciteit, ging op reis en fietste de Mont Ventoux op. Zijn grote vriendenkring organiseerde sportieve evenementen ten bate van Stichting ALS Nederland.
Nicky van den Eijnden from Helmond was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 29 in 2016. He lived in turbo mode for the next three years: he got married as quickly as possible, frequently appeared in the media, traveled, and cycled up Mont Ventoux. His large circle of friends organized sports events for the benefit of the ALS Netherlands Foundation.
Daan Kamphorst (26) nam drie jaar geleden afscheid van zijn vader Erik, die op 52-jarige leeftijd overleed aan ALS. Nadat in februari 2015 de diagnose was gesteld volgde Daan, die dit jaar als regisseur afstudeert aan de St. Joost Academie in Breda, het ziekteproces op de voet met zijn foto- en videocamera. Daan kreeg veel aandacht voor zijn foto’s in de media, maar het voltooien van de documentaire stelt hij vooralsnog uit. “Dat is te confronterend.”
Daan Kamphorst (26) said farewell to his father Erik three years ago, who passed away from ALS at the age of 52. After the diagnosis was made in February 2015, Daan, who is graduating this year as a director from the St. Joost Academy in Breda, closely documented the disease process with his photo and video camera. Daan received much attention for his photos in the media, but he is currently postponing the completion of the documentary. "It's too confronting," he says.
Julia Vendel (14) was zeven jaar oud toen in 2014 bij haar vader Pascal de diagnose ALS werd gesteld. Ze wist in het begin amper wat de ziekte inhield en koesterde nog even de hoop dat hij beter zou worden. Maar na slechts tweeënhalf jaar overleed haar vader op 48-jarige leeftijd. Inmiddels zit Julia op het Baarnsch Lyceum, in klas 3 havo. Ze is zojuist verhuisd van Baarn naar Soest, het huis achterlatend waar veel herinneringen aan haar vader liggen.

In the beginning, she barely understood what the disease entailed and held onto the hope that he would get better. However, after only two and a half years, her father passed away at the age of 48. Julia is now attending Baarnsch Lyceum, in the third year of havo. She has recently moved from Baarn to Soest, leaving behind the house filled with many memories of her father.
De ziekte van Lou Gehrig is amyotrofische laterale sclerose (ALS), een ernstige en progressieve neurologische aandoening. De ziekte tast motorische neuronen aan, wat leidt tot spierzwakte, verlamming en uiteindelijk ademhalingsproblemen. De naam "ziekte van Lou Gehrig" is afgeleid van het feit dat de beroemde honkballer Lou Gehrig aan deze ziekte is overleden.
Lou Gehrig's disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a serious and progressive neurological disorder. The disease attacks motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually respiratory failure. The name "Lou Gehrig's disease" comes from the fact that the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig died from this disease.
